I have to admit that I was one of the skeptics on budgeting. For quite a few years, I earned a pretty fair salary, and unfortunately, loved to travel, so I usually spent more than I earned. It didn't take too long to have several credit cards maxed out, BIG TIME!

Not long after, I met the man of my dreams, and he really believed in living within a budget. Even before we were married, we talked about our finances, and what we could do with my $35,000+ credit card balances. I thought about bankruptcy, but he wouldn't hear of it and said that we would repay every penny of that debt. (He did mean WE) Right after we were married, we sat down together at our computer and he began entering everything into the software called "You Need A Budget". How ironic could that be?

Without going into too much detail, it took us about 3 years to repay everything, and now we are budgeting money for a down payment on a home. It wasn't easy for me as I had to make a serious change in life style. I did it though, with my husband's help, and now I no longer have that financial stress. Saving money for our first home is also a good feeling. I no longer am a skeptic at living within a budget and highly recommend it to every one.

If you have been denied of a loan or a credit card, it may have something to do with an important number that will determine if you are credit worthy. This number is called your credit score. This number is what creditors, such as banks and credit card companies will look at in order to know if you will possibly pay them back or not.

I agree with the sentence "Shopping addiction is a very real threat to young adults, as studies show. Not being able to control one’s urges to buy things that aren’t necessary is a sign of a real problem"\

I feel that this is the only problem....

I can't emphasize enough to use the cash envelope method of setting up a family budget. Our family didn't use one early enough and we got into serious financial trouble with credit cards. We had to file bankruptcy, which was bad enough, and then we were forced to go on a cash basis because nobody would give us any credit. It was tough at first, but when you really work at it, it becomes pretty easy. We tried the online budgeting system here and liked it so much, that we use it all the time. It's very important to take all the time that you have to to get your financial affairs setup properly as early as you can. Once it is setup, it doesn't take much time at all and you know where all of the money is going, all of the time. Take the advice from someone who has been there and paid the price.

As you mentioned above - use the cash system and no credit/debit cards (keep only 1 for emergency with limited credit/balance)

We shop only using a list made up before we leave home and this has helped a lot. We disciplined ourselves to only buy what is on the list and nothing else. We use cash that is placed in different envelopes each payday, for the various purchases like food, gasoline, etc. Our paychecks are deposited in our bank account and we cash a check for the total of the envelopes. When we go shopping or go out, no debit or credit cards go with us.

If it's not on the list - it doesn't get bought! As far as time goes, it takes a few minutes to make up a list. At the beginning, it took a little more time until we got used to our method of family budgeting, but for us, this works.
